Overview

A wearable device that measures the UV index and reminds you to reapply sunscreen accordingly. Geared towards children, this device is not only adorable but works without WiFi and is rechargeable. This prototype features a UV sensor and an Arduino Nano board.

Off the shores of Lake Victoria in Mwanza, Tanzania is a home to a group of lovely children I had the privilege of meeting in the Spring of 2024. Tanga House, a home for albino children, who due to their condition are often ostracized and sometimes subject to violence. These special children sparked the idea for Solani.

Individuals with albinism are more likely to suffer and pass away from skin cancer - what if there was a device that could remind them to reapply sunscreen without the use of an app or WiFi?
